Visit our Media Bias Rating Methodology page to learn more. Some things we took into account include whether the source was a top outlet in terms of traffic according to Pew Research Center. We also took into account how often people search for the bias of that outlet on Google and visit AllSides as a result.
We also include outlets that are good representations a certain perspective or ideology. For example, Jacobin magazine is included because it represents socialist thought, while Reason magazine is included because it represents libertarian thought.
These are subjective judgements made by AllSides and people across the country. Learn our rough approximation for what the media bias ratings mean:. Center doesn't mean better! A Center media bias rating does not always mean neutral, unbiased or reasonable, just as "far Left" and "far Right" do not always mean "extreme," "wrong," or "unreasonable. A media outlet with a Center rating may omit important perspectives, or run individual articles that display bias, while not displaying a lot of predictable bias frequently.
Center outlets can be difficult to determine, and a case can often be made for them leaning one way or the other. While it may be easy to think that we should only consume media from Center outlets, AllSides believes Center is not necessarily the answer. By reading only Center outlets, we may still encounter bias and omission of important issues and perspectives. For this reason, it is important to consume a balanced news diet across the spectrum.
Center doesn't mean better. You can think of our bias ratings as points of view, each providing pieces of the puzzle, so that we may have a more holistic view.
This is because some outlets, such as the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and the New York Times, have a notable difference in bias between their news and opinion sections. And so on. When rating an Opinion page, AllSides takes into account the outlet's editorial board and its individual opinion page writers. For example, the New York Times has a range of individual Opinion page writers, who have a range of biases.
We rate the bias of commentators individually as much as possible. We take into account both the overall biases of the individual writers and the Editorial Board to arrive at a final bias rating of Left for the New York Times opinion section.
Taking the above example, if the user had a printer with a page height of px, the media statement would return true because the first query would apply. Likewise, if the user were on a smartphone in portrait mode with a viewport height of px, the second query would apply and the media statement would still return true.
The not keyword inverts the meaning of an entire media query. It will only negate the specific media query it is applied to. Thus, it will not apply to every media query in a comma-separated list of media queries.
The not keyword can't be used to negate an individual feature query, only an entire media query. The not is evaluated last in the following query:. The only keyword prevents older browsers that do not support media queries with media features from applying the given styles. It has no effect on modern browsers. The Media Queries Level 4 specification includes some syntax improvements to make media queries using features that have a "range" type, for example width or height, less verbose.
Level 4 adds a range context for writing such queries. For example, using the max- functionality for width we might write the following:. Using not around a media feature negates that feature in the query. For example, not hover would match if the device had no hover capability:. You can use or to test for a match among more than one feature, resolving to true if any of the features are true. For example, the following query tests for devices that have a monochrome display or hover capability:.
